Mum Asks: How Does ChatGPT Decide Which Business to Recommend?

Mum asks:

I asked ChatGPT where I should go for dinner and told it I wanted a good Italian restaurant. It gave me three places. But how does ChatGPT actually decide which business to recommend? Why those three?

There may be twenty Italian restaurants around you, so yes — something has to narrow the choice.

The easiest way to understand it is to look at what ChatGPT has to work with.

First, it needs to find information about suitable businesses

If you ask for an Italian restaurant, ChatGPT needs to find information showing which places actually are Italian restaurants.

That might come from the restaurant’s own website, Google Maps, directories, reviews, articles or other places online.

One restaurant may be clearly described as an Italian restaurant in several places. Another may have little more than a name, an address and a few photos.

The first one is much easier to connect with what you asked for.

So just being there doesn’t guarantee anything.

Exactly. If ChatGPT can’t find enough useful information about a business, it has much less to work with.

Some businesses give ChatGPT a much clearer picture

Now imagine it has found ten Italian restaurants.

They all fit the basic request, but the information about them can look very different.

One has an up-to-date website, a current menu and prices, correct opening hours and plenty of recent reviews.

Another has an old website, an outdated menu, different opening hours on its website and Google Maps, and hardly any recent reviews.

They are both Italian restaurants. But one gives ChatGPT a much clearer and more current picture.

That difference matters when it is deciding which businesses to put forward.

The context of your question can change the answer

But what if several of them still look perfectly good?

Then what you actually want becomes important.

Maybe earlier in the conversation you said you didn’t want to spend too much tonight.

Now “a good Italian restaurant” doesn’t simply mean any good Italian restaurant. It means one that also makes sense for your budget.

A very expensive restaurant may have excellent reviews and perfect information online, but it still may not be the right suggestion for you tonight.

If you asked a different question tomorrow, the answer could change.

Ah. So it isn’t choosing the best restaurant in some universal sense.

Right. It is trying to choose a business that makes sense for the particular request in front of it.

The real process is more complicated

Of course, ChatGPT may use many more signals than the few we’ve talked about here.

But the restaurant example is enough to show the basic logic behind the choice.
